Create Your Own Website Free – What If No One Comes?

The offers to create your own website free are abundant. Use any search engine to bear that out. You can create free websites galore! In fact, you can learn how to make a free website for just about anything.

But wait a minute!Mobile Stats vs Desktop Stats

Create A Free Website – What About Mobile Content?

How does that work out for your visitors with mobile phones or small tablets? Just because you were able to create a free website, load up spectacular photographs and persuasive videos, doesn’t mean that your mobile device visitors are going to have the same experience as if they were using a desktop!

Huh?

The graph shows that mobile computing surpassed desktop computing three years ago!!! Three years ago, folks! I remember the argument. “But there are no apps.” Despite the fact that that weak argument that has long since been kicked in the head, our smart phones have browsers fully capable of rendering web pages.

So yeah, you’ve picked up a website for free. Did anyone give you a lesson in design? Will your content be “mobile friendly?” As the old Wendy’s commercial used to go, “Where’s the beef?” Are the photos and illustrations going to automatically resize for the smaller device? What kind of content are you going to put on it? Is your Content Management Software (CMS) going to automatically handle your website regardless of the device being used?

If you are using Wealthy Affiliate, the answer is yes.

Let’s face it, most people on social websites are using their smart phones and/or tablets. I know of one website where the header image is a scrumptious looking piece of grilled salmon. As long as your smart phone is landscaped, it looks quite appetizing. Turn it to portrait and immediately someone will ask, “What the hell is that?”

Create A Free Website – Make Your Content Mobile Friendly

In the Viet Nam era there was a popular bumper sticker that read: Suppose They Gave A War and No One Came. An anti-war magazine article by the same name was no doubt the inspiration. There’s also a 1970 movie, Suppose They Gave A War and Nobody Came, inspired by the article and starring Brian Keith, Ernest Borgnine, Suzanne Pleshette and Tony Curtis. Something tells me the war won’t get many takers. Action will be slim. The same can be said of free websites. Or any website for that matter, regardless of cost. Suppose you created a free website and no one came. Different context but the message is the same.

Did you give your visitor what they are looking for in a format that fits the device they are using?

Create A Free Website – Options For Smart Mobile Content

Most WordPress® themes obtained through Wealthy Affiliate have an option in the left sidebar for looking at your web design using the device indicated. The three options are:

  • Desktop
  • Tablet
  • Smart Phone

Desktop and Mobile Output Icons

They appear as icons at the bottom left of the sidebar when you click on Appearance, then click on Customize. By default, desktop is selected and the right half of your screen will contain the website image as seen from a desktop.

Click on the tablet icon and you’ll get a different rendition. This time the website view is the one for a tablet.

Free Websites, Mobile Design – What Is Your Take?

I would really love to hear what you have to say about free websites and the design tools and aid that you get, especially for mobile devices. Mobile devices are the future of computing. That is evidenced by falling desktop sales and soaring mobile device sales.

Do you devote any time and effort toward the mobile user? If so, what? Tell me your thoughts and gravitational pull in the comments section below. Ubiquitous computing is a fascinating topic to me and it is evident that we are approaching that mile marker at an alarming rate. Will we be ready?

These are some really great points, Mike. Most of us build our websites and write content from a desktop or a laptop because, let’s face it, it’s a lot easier. But when it comes to browsing, there are a lot of people who use only tablets or phones. My wife hasn’t looked at a desktop in years. She just uses her iPad.

Thank you, Andy! Within the last week, maybe two weeks, I noticed that a lot of my friends and family have done away with their desktops and more and more are ditching the laptops and using tablets mostly.

Some are exclusive smart phone users. And when you look at the rapidly growing number of people who are doing their web surfing, shopping and buying using tablets and smart phones, it only makes sense that their bounce rates are going to be high if we aren’t delivering what they’re looking for!

If that first page doesn’t compel them to keep going, they’re most likely out of there!

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

Very Impressive! It is good that your website is hosted on a platform that comes with all that you might anticipate. I know that WA does all that and more. One fascinating thing about Wealthy Affiliate is that you can have multiple windows open at the same time and it is not a problem.
When I get tired while sitting around the desk I usually relax somewhere with my tablet. Your post is very informative. Your readers will be enlightened if this is information they did not know.
There are some individuals who do not bother with computers they just use their phones. They would be left out if they could not reach their websites from their phones.
    Good Read!

Thank you, Norman, for the message and encouragement! I just kept seeing all these ads for free websites. Took them up on a couple and I was basically on my own. Geez! What if I didn’t know how to put a website together? Then I’d have a website with nothing to help anyone! Hence, my title…

      Thanks again, Norman!

What a great post. that is a good question, what if no one comes. It is kind of discouraging and you have to wonder is it worth all the time, then one day you open up the editor and see 20 new comments! Thank you for sharing this great post. Keep em coming. 🙂

    Hey MIke,

Mobile optimization is a must and Google will be dinging sites that do not have mobile optimization. As for free websites, it all depends on how much you know about website design and building. I don’t think it’s quite rocket science but for those who are “technically challenged”, building a website with menus, categories and etc. may not be so intuitive. A free website may give a a few pointers, but where do you go from there? I’ve learned there’s a lot more than signing up for a free website and putting a few posts up.

So, most people would love to have an all inclusive place where they can learn EVERYTHING and not just a piece here and a piece there. It sounds like that’s where Wealthy Affiliate can fill that need.

Exactly! And well said, Cindy! I think most people think they’re going to get a fantasy website, get it free and the people will come in hordes. That’s what I mean by, “What if no one comes?” If we don’t give the user a reason to visit our site, stay with it to read it, all the way to fulfilling our CTA, then it’s all just a moot point.

That IS where Wealthy Affiliate comes in, where we learn to develop a website that is informative, interesting and sells our point of view.

Thank you for your visit and for your comment! It is well said, to the point, and it’s obvious that you are knowledgeable and well-informed!
